Also known as: Mavro Naoustiano, Popolka, Xinongaltso, Mavro Naousis

This is one of the most noble red varieties of Northern Greece, cultivated chiefly at Naousa, Goumenissa, Amyntaio, Rapsani, Siatista, Velvento, and in the Prefectures of Ioannina, Trikala, Kastoria, and Magnesia, as well as in scattered locations in Central Greece. It shows great variation, depending upon the conditions of the terrain and climate in which it is cultivated.

Its grape is of medium size with a thick skin of a blue-black colour, and colourless flesh with a sweet and slightly sharp taste. Its harvest starts after 20 September.

The Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality (OPAP) Naousa, Amyntaio, Rapsani (together with the Nengoska variety), Rapsani (with Krasato and Stavroto) wines, Rose and Amyntaio OPAP Sparkling Ros?, and a number of Local Wines (Makedonikos, Imathia, Chalkidiki, Plagies Vertiskou, etc.) are made from Xinomavro.

It is considered a variety with considerable potential which is capable of providing different types of products. In areas of a certain height, suitable soils, and small yields per vine, it can produce aromatic red wines of high alcohol content with good acidity and great potential for ageing. On higher ground it yields noteworthy ros?s and sparkling wines. It can also be the source of white wines (Blanc de Noirs).

Our company harvests Xinomavro from the Naousa area. It contributes to the Rose Averoff, Naousa Averoff, and Purple Earth (together with Agiorgitiko) wines.
